FARIDKOT (PUNJAB): A local court in Faridkot on Saturday acquitted Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal in a 17-year-old assault case.
Sukhbir Badal, also president of the ruling Akali Dal, was present in the court when Judicial Magistrate Satish Kumar pronounced the order on a case filed by journalist Naresh Sehgal on September 5, 1999, in Kotkapura town near here.
Mr Sehgal had alleged that he was threatened by Sukhbir Badal, then contesting elections from Faridkot, and his supporters.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court on June 30, 2006, ordered police to book eight accused, including Mr Badal, for assault.
A democratic setup can never be successful without people’s participation. Citizen participation is instrumental in achieving good governance and helps in decision-making process. It facilitates the government in understanding citizens’ viewpoint and getting their feedback. Moreover, our commitment towards creating a free world devoid of any prejudices and biases can only be achieved if people can ask question and raise issues. This will also keep us in tuned with ground reality. So, I encourage each and every citizen to freely discuss various issues, ask solution to your specific problem and most importantly question us on our functioning.
