The credit of making Punjab ‘Power Surplus’ goes to Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal who courageously invested in big power projects like new thermal plants in Rajpura (1400 mw), Talwandi Sabo (1980 mw) and Goindwal Sahib (540 mw).
The achievement gets supported as one can compare the connections of electricity in the state before the government led by Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal came up; the number has jumped from 6800000 connections in 2007 to 8329976 in 2014-15.
The energy growth of the state has also seen a rise in the past few years. In the year 2014-15 according to the State Electricity Board stats 46034.90 net energy units of power were generated.
Punjab has also emerged as a trendsetter in solar power generation; increasing its capacity from 9MW in 2012 to roughly 1080 MW in 2016.
